The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) condemned the targeting of journalists Jehan Belkin and Nazem Dashtan, and demanded that those responsible for targeting journalists in war zones be held accountable.
"Our colleagues were covering the situation in northern Syria. I am particularly shocked that they were deliberately targeted by a Turkish drone strike, while they were working as journalists. We condemn this attack on our colleagues and demand accountability," said IFJ General Secretary Anthony Belanger.
The IFJ also expressed its deepest condolences to the families of Nazem Dashtan and Jehan Belkin. It also urged the new political authorities in Syria to conduct an independent investigation into these crimes, as well as to identify and convict the perpetrators of these crimes.
"It is unacceptable to target journalists who convey the truth to the public at the cost of their lives in conflict zones. We condemn attacks on journalists. Those responsible for the killing of journalists in war zones in Palestine and Syria must be brought to justice," said DİSK Basın-İş, an IFJ-affiliated organization in Turkey.
